YFM Boys Bring Hip Hop to Newberry

Trezkilla and Bruhdilli

Trezkilla and Bruhdilli

At the ages of 10 and 12, when most brothers are fighting over video games, Trezkilla and Bruhdilli were freestyling fire verses to their family and friends. Together Trezkilla and Bruhdilli, now 17 and 15 respectively, make up Newberry’s iconic rapping brother duo, YFM Boys.

To date, YFM Boys have released two albums and swept up fans from across the world with their viral Tik Tok song, “Star Student.” With nearly 42,000 views and 120,000 listens from across the globe “Star Student” is easily one of YFM Boys’ biggest hits

Fortunately for Newberry, as the YFM Boys’ fan-following increases, so does the recognition of the abundance of talent that resides in the (now even more) illustrious 803.

You may have already experienced the music of YFM Boys, as they recently rocked downtown Newberry with their epic, live, Park Jam performance in front of the Opera House.

But what does YFM even mean? An artist’s name is critical to their presence in this field. Through the process of elimination Trezkilla and Bruhdilli came up with the name YFM boys which stands for Young Face Money. Trezkilla joked, “Big Face Money was already taken, so we went with this one,” and now they are forever known as YFM Boys.

YFM Boys began rapping because they always grew up around music. “It [music] was always with us.” Rapping was something that made sense to them given that they were so engulfed in music already. Determined and eager to release more music later this year, they hinted at album number three releasing soon.

Like most brothers, YFM boys engage in classic sibling shenanigans. Trezkilla explained, “Bruhdilli won’t let me hear his verse just to worry me. Then in the studio he goes crazy.” Only a little brother would try to keep his brother on the edge just for fun. While they sometimes butt heads, at the end of the day, they come together and compromise like most siblings. Their bond and family support have kept them motivated to continue following their dreams.

Along with being rappers, the YFM Boys also are full-time high school students who, like any other student, must complete homework and prepare for tests. While they strive to advance their music career, they also prioritize education. When they aren’t doing schoolwork during weekends and summertime you will find them in the studio or shooting music videos in downtown Newberry.

YFM Boys’ raps are inspired by the people around them and their real life. Their authenticity inspires fans to relate to their music and fosters a genuine fan-to-artist bond. YFM Boys’ creative process involves pouring their emotions into the lyrics of a rap song. They even use hate comments on their online videos to their advantage by incorporating them into future lyrics. YFM boys laughingly said, “we just add those comments into the song.” The ability to combat the negative by transforming it into a positive is true a gift, and indicates that the YFM Boys’ talents go beyond music.

YFM Boys’ favorite part about creating music is shooting elaborate music videos. Perhaps not coincidentally, it was their music videos that led to them being discovered. Second, to that, they enjoy being in the studio room rapping to banger beats.

The process of making music is somewhat spontaneous for the Boys. Before hitting the studio, the group takes about 20 minutes to draft a rough outline for the rap. The real magic happens in the studio where they mostly freestyle using their rough outline as a guide. Trezkilla explained, “when the verse is practiced at home it sounds good but when you put it on the beat it sounds perfect.” It seems making music for them is second nature, which may explain why they have over 20 unreleased songs!

Their latest music is from their second album, “Confessions in the Dark.” The message behind the second album is exactly what you might think: It’s filled with confessions. Their first album, “Star Student,” was centered around music that one could dance and blast through the car speakers, but “Confessions in the Dark” is different. It’s about “telling people how we really feel, love situations, people hating on us, and still coming out strong.” The album starts off with a slow song and then progresses into a rather upbeat song called “Trending Topics ft. T.K. The Greatest.” Through these two albums, the YFM Boys have gained a strong fan following. They’ve also collaborated with other local rappers such as T.K. The Greatest, 1300 Yola, and Lowkeyy. From the song order to the rap lyrics, the YFM boys have crafted their music in such a way that is bound to touch the hearts of many people.

YFM Boys envision their future filled with recognition, love, and support. The ambitious rap duo has made it their mission to expand horizons and reach broader audiences. They hope to release more music and also give back to the community. The YFM Boys’ youthful energy radiates and inspires listeners and upcoming artists as well. Stay tuned for album number three!
